Premise

The Night World only has two rules:

1. Never allow a human to gain knowledge of the Night World's existence.
2. Never fall in love with a human.

The rules are being broken. Human are being brought into the Night World over and over at an increasingly dangerous rate. Many in the Night World want to continue to keep their world and lives closed off from humans, but some inhabits of the Night World are finding soulmates and allies in the humans they are told to hate and look down upon.

As the two worlds collide, the dynamics all around both Night World inhabits and humans are changing. Humans are shocked to find out that such things as vampires, witches, and shape shifters exist and find it hard to believe right away. But you cannot deny the truth that is standing right in front of you.

Where do you belong?

_______

The Night World RPG is Strange Fate non-compliant and will not change when the book is published. The primary goal and game play of the Night World RPG is to focus on the races of the Night World, how the inhabits of the Night World interact with humans, and the Soulmate Principle. The Wild Powers are able to be played, but their major purpose to stop the impending apocalypse isn't the major focus of the game.

People who have never read the series and know nothing about it is welcome as long as they read the information provided for them. If questions and concerns come up in the game they want to see if there is canon behind, they can ask a mod or a fellow player that has read the series. The canon for this series - despite spanning 9 books/3 omnibuses is very slim. There is a lot of room for growth, things to explore, and expand upon.

The Night World Races and Soulmate Principle

While the Night World is everywhere, gameplay will take place primarily in Las Vegas. You may start your character somewhere else and make your way to Las Vegas, but the majority of the characters should be located at least most of the time in Las Vegas.

The symbols for the races of the Night World are pictures and such that Night World inhabits carry about to identify themselves with. Using the symbols tells someone you are part of the Night World, what you are, and such. It's just an easy way to identify yourself and someone else before you speak of the Night World, which you're not supposed to mention to anyone outside the Night World itself.

Humans

Humans are the ruling class. They have no special powers. Originally, all humans are unaware of the existence of the Night World until it is revealed to them by a current member of the Night World.

The Soulmate Principle is a main contributor to why humans are gaining knowledge about the Night World. Night World inhabitants are finding soulmates in humans and forced to reveal their true nature.

Vampires

There are two types of vampires that exist: lamia and "made vampires". Lamia are born vampires. Lamias can age, but have the ability to stop the aging process at any time. However, when they restart the aging process, their aging is sped up so they become their true physical age in a very short amount of time. They can eat as humans do as well but feed on blood. "Made vampires" are vampires that are turned by either a lamia or another "made vampire" by exchanging blood. The vampire and human must exchange the blood and the change does not occur if the vampire only drinks the blood. "Made vampires" do not age, cannot get nourishment from food (they must have blood), and cannot produce children.

Both lamia and "made vampires" have special abilities. Vampires have superhuman strength, speed, and agility. Some have telepathic powers. Unlike some vampire lore, vampires cannot change into bats (or any other creature) and sunlight only weakens a vampire rather than destroying them. Vampires need blood to survive (their blood cannot carry oxygen and need human blood to breathe) and while the need for blood comes as a hunger at first, the vampire ends up in intense pain in their muscles that are starving for oxygen until they feed. While immortal, vampires are weak to wood and fire and can be killed.

Symbol: black rose (made vampires only)
Symbol: unknown (lamias)

Witches

Witches may be both male and female. They may perform magical spells using gemstones, herbs, effigies, and incarnations while their magic is inane and their magical does not always have to have external elements to perform. Witches first answer to the Inner Circle which consists of the Mother, the Maiden, and the Crone. Humans psychics may be "lost witches" which are descendants that are unaware of their magical powers or ancestry. Witches are vulnerable to iron.

Witches belong to circles as their community. Circle Twilight are are the witches are respect the creed "do no harm" and practice lighter magic. Which Circle Midnight are witches are practice the darker aspect of their talent. A third circle, Circle Daybreak, allows witches, vampires (both lamia and "made vampires"), shape shifters, and humans to join and are trying to lead the cause to establish a peaceful and balanced world between all races. Due to the witch hunts in Burning Times, Circle Daybreak is kept secret to anyone in the Night World who is not already a member, but with recent times, some suspect it's reincarnation.

Symbol: black dahlia and crescent moon with three stars (witches)
Symbol: black violet (lost witches)

Shape Shifters

Shape shifters can transform into animals at will. Originally, shape shifters may choose which animal they change into, but once the choice is made it is permanent and cannot be changed. Shape shifters are treated as second-class citizens in the Night World. They are vulnerable to silver.

Symbol: black lily

Werewolves

Werewolves are a very specific type of shape shifters. These shape shifters transfer between wolves to humans and back only. Werewolves can be born or made. They have animal urges in both wolf and human form which makes them very territorial. Because werewolves must consume organs, they are more likely to kill each time they feed. The Night World has banned them from feeding on humans and state that legally they may only feed on animals. As such, they are treated in the Night World as second-class citizens and face prejudice. They are vulnerable to silver.

Symbol: black foxglove

The Soulmate Principle

The Soulmate Principle is the theory that two people who are soulmates are connected by a silver cord only visible to the soulmates themselves. Through the silver cord, the soulmates can feel what each other are feeling if the person concentrates. The strength of the connection varies. Some soulmates know instantly that something is amiss - or that they are connected to the other person - by a simple touch, a spark of electricity that travels from one to the other, but for some soulmates it takes years to figure it out. Exchanging blood is one way for a person to find out they are soulmates with someone else. Soulmates can enter each other's mind and see their memories, thoughts, and feelings. Thoughts and memories can be blocked, but it takes concentration. If the concentration lapse during the time that one person is in someone else's mind, the blocks will fall down to allow the other person to see everything.

In the game, if you would like your character to find their soulmate, it's encouraged. There are no promises on a character receiving a soul mate they will like. The mods will work with any writers who want a soulmate, abide by the wishes of those who do not, and try to match compatible writers. If you find a character or a writer you'd like to have as your character's soulmate, then please speak to both the writer in question and the mods. No one is forced to ship with the Soulmate Principle with anyone they do not want to.

Rules

1. Please play nicely. It's rather simple. Treat players with respect when you write with them, which includes: not starting wank, tagging back in a timely manner, not dropping threads, and generally being a nice person.

We know not expect everyone to be friends, but everyone should be civil when dealing with each other. If you encounter a problem with another player that is interfering with your ability to play or enjoy the game, then speak to a mod. We are here to help, and even act as the mediator if needed.

2. Please listen to mods of the game. We are here to help, coordinate the game, and make it a better place for everyone. If we contact you because of issues we see with your playing or interactions with others, please do not take it personally. We are not picking on anyone. We are merely trying to keep the game fun and enjoyable for everyone. If you do not like what we have to say or how we run the game, you are welcome to leave with no hard feelings.

If you receive an email from the mods during your time in the game, please reply. If you do not reply, we do not know you read it. If the mods write you an email and you do not reply within a timely manner, another email will be sent. If there is no reply to that email, based on severity of the issue, you may be banned from the game. (Note: There are many instances where a player can be incapable of replying to an email we sent them: Real life issues, Internet connection issues, School, ect. If you have been banned for not replying to an email and in fact were unable to reply due to one of these issues, you may be allowed back into game. Simply email the mods with your explanation and discuss with them retaking your character. Again, this all rides on the reasoning why you were emailed in the first place.)

3. No players under 18-years-old may join. If a player is found out to be under eighteen, they will be immediately banned.

4. There is no godmodding, or info-modding in this game allowed. If this occurs and a mod is aware of it, or it's brought to a mod's attentions, action will be taken. Godmodding is defined as taking control of another person's character without said person’s permission. Info-modding is having your character privy to information that they they reasonably would not know. It is exceptionally easy to mistakenly godmod and info-mod. First offenses will receive a friendly warning email but repeated offenses will considered grounds for banning.

5. Any plot that include death, torture, pregnancy, or any other element that might either change the course of your character's life in the game or effect other people or the game as a whole must be approved by the mods. We do not want to discourage these plots but merely want to make sure there is a plan and the plot will not go unfinished. They must always be given a time-line and have some sort of resolution in mind. Do not start a storyline/plot like this without prior mod approval or the mods will put an end to it. The mods are willing to help flesh out ideas, but also are here to coordinate things.

6. Each character much have a thread every two weeks. The mods will be keeping track. If you cannot fulfill this requirement and have a good reason, you might want to take a hiatus until you can. The mods will grant hiatuses, but if it becomes excessive or one on-going, long hiatus, you may be asked to drop or even just drop temporarily until you are in a place that you have the free time to play. Please be honest with us and yourself for how much time you have to play. If you need to drop a character or more to retain activity, then do so knowing there will be nothing held against you. We'd rather have characters who fulfill the activity requirement, then characters who do not.

7. Understand that actions have consequences. If your character does something that would reasonably have consequences, then they will have to deal with that.. The consequences may be up to the mods depending on what the character has done. Understand actions your characters may take may cause characters or players to hate your character. This is part of the consequences. You must be able to handle those consequences and not complain about them.

8. Please be aware that there are no one word tags. We are aware that not every response needs to be a paragraph but tags should be at least a complete sentence and written with correct grammar. There will be no netspeak in the writing and everything is written in third-person past tense. The mods understand that no one is perfect, and mistakes happen, but if typos, bad grammar, or failure to tag at the proper length occur on a constant basis, the mods will speak to you about it.

Other Infomation

- All character journals must end with "-night" whether where is a "_" separating or not.

- All posts at the rpg should use the same header that's below. It's in a nice copy and paste box for your convenience.

- All posts to the rpg should be tagged appropriately. Upon your first post, the mods will create a character tag for your character (mods must use the tags first, but from then on, every writer may use the tags). The three types tags that must be there are "character:", "location:", and "date:".

- PBs must be a reasonable age and physical description (if they have been described physically in canon, they must fit that description as much as possible).

- Time passes in "real time" here. If it's Thursday April 1,in real life that means it's Thursday April 1 in game, and the next day would be Friday April 2 in real life and Friday April 2 in the game. And so forth. While the books are published in the 1990s, the mods have decided that the game will start in the year 2002. There is no actual year listed in the books to derive the dates from. If you have a canon character, please take the character from the time the book ends.

- If you need for any reason to postpone posting a scene, whether it be personal or you have to finish another scene in progress before you can write it, we encourage using placeholders. Just post an entry in the community with some information of it being a placeholder and go back and fill it in at a later time. However, placeholders must be filled within a week or the mods will ask you to delete it. We understand getting busy, but we do not want to front page of the comm to just look a bunch of placeholders with no tags. If there is something hindering you and you really want and need to do the thread, explain it to the mods. They will be as reasonable as they can be.

- If you want to do a solo scene without tagging anyone to express your characters' personal thoughts/feelings/motives, you can use a reflective. It's exactly like a scene without anyone tagging and the word "reflective:" in the title/subject rather than "RP:". Your character should be doing something in the reflective, even if it's small (because of how we write in third person past tense for all posts). Personal journals of the characters will not be used at all for gameplay.

- Open/Public scenes are welcome as well. If you want a random encounter with whomever choices to reply, put your character in a neutral place, have them available in the scene for interaction and go from there. You never know what you'll end up with in an open scene. Sometimes the surprise is more interest and fun than a planned meeting.

Cast

Canon characters are welcome. Remember that they might not have their counterpart to the "Soulmate Principle" in the game. Original characters are welcome and encouraged. Original characters will be able to experience the "Soulmate Principle" in the game if the writer chooses. The "Soulmate Principle" is not forced upon anyone, but it is a main aspect to the canon.

If a writer drops, the character may be recast with both the same history and in game canon. If you're interested in a character being recast, speak to the mods.

Comment with a hold (whether it be character [you may use the race of the character for the hold as well] or pb or both). Holds last five days. Extensions will be given on request for three days. Two holds per person at a time. After the holds are up or you have turned in an application, you may place another hold.

* All character journals must end with "-night" whether where is a "_" separating or not.

Wanted Characters

If you are writer and want a specific character in the game, then please comment below with the details.

"Other Information" may be as little or as much as you like (if possible, stating what race the wanted character is preferred). However, if you plan out every detail of the character, it limits creative freedom so try to be fair. You may suggest a pb (the applier won't be obligated to use it).
